NHRMA Graduate Student Award (honoring Sharon Koss)

    This award recognizes up to two graduate students who have performed outstanding service to the HR profession and to the Association in the best tradition of Sharon Koss. 

    Sharon Koss was passionate about developing HR Professionals through continuing education to advance the profession in the Pacific Northwest.  The intent of the award is to recognize student performance as it adheres to the stated goals of the Association.  Nominees must demonstrate service in their local SHRM Chapter, community, or within the professional human resources community.  Activities may include but are not limited to chapter involvement (student or professional), student leadership (involvement in student or professional groups), HR internships, work and/or volunteer experience, and professional or student projects.

    ELIGIBILITY

    All students who are dues-paying members of a SHRM chapter in the NHRMA Region and who are in a degree-seeking program at any time during the most recent academic year are eligible.  Students are eligible to win the award one time.  Graduate students, whether continuing or graduating, are eligible.

    The nominee must meet and include all of the following criteria to be considered for this award: 

    • Member of an AK, OR, or WA student or professional chapter

    • The student is/has been enrolled in a graduate degree program in the NHRMA region at any time during the most recent academic year and is in good academic standing

    • The student has not received this award previously

    • The student will be asked to complete a 500-600 word Statement of Service and Professional Gaos, which may include experience, service to student and/or professional chapters, community and volunteer service (if applicable), work experience or internships (if applicable), and professional goals, etc.

    • A recommendation statement has been included in this application from an Advisor or SHRM member supporting the nomination

    At the discretion of the selection committee, a request for further student written responses and/or a telephone interview may be requested.

    AWARD RECIPIENTS

    Recipients will receive the following:

    • A $500 Scholarship
    • SHRM Student Membership paid for two years
    • A certificate commemorating the award
    • Picture and article summarizing achievement on the NHRMA social media
    • Recognition at the NHRMA Conference for recipient and Advisor

    NHRMA does not cover registration, travel, or other costs of attendance at the conference for the award recipient or their Advisor.

    NOMINATION DEADLINE

    Submit electronic nominations via the nomination form link at the top of this page by June 30th. Allow time for nominees to submit their statement of service and professional goals. The link for submission is visible once the nomination is submitted.

    NOTIFICATION OF NOMINATION PROCESS

    Once an application is received, written notification will be sent to the nominating party and to the nominee. 

    SELECTION COMMITTEE PROCESS

    Once an application is received, written notification will be sent to the nominating party and to the nominee.  An appointed selection committee will review the applications and make a recommendation to the NHRMA Board, which will make the final decision on recipients.  Following this decision, the nominating party and nominee will be notified by phone and email.


    APPLICATION PROCEDURE

    Any SHRM member or Faculty Advisor may nominate a student for the award.  Self-nominations will also be accepted.
